7)  The organisation needs to determine the effectiveness of its health and safety performance. 

Based on the activities (actual or planned) in the scenario, what could you collect and use as health and safety performance indicators in the organisation?       

Answer:

Looking at the scenario the activities that could be considered as a health and safety indicators to determine HSE performance as follows:

q  Organisation is abiding to the government rules and regulations and allowing all the workers to work from home in order to control the virus spread through physical contact and to mitigate the virus risk. 

q  Development of new procedures and guidance by HSE representative for all the workers working from home, the compliance of the newly developed procedure can help to indicate the HSE performance of the organization.

q  Management really cares about the workers wellbeing their physical and mental health due which they have introduced 30 minutes computer based team meetings and also developed a forum for complaints as well moreover there is also a provision for the employees who are hesitant in group video conferencing.

q  Recording the virus infected cases and reporting it to the government this also a legal compliance to the government bodies. This will enforce the organization to do the incident investigation and number of cases reported will also help determining the health and safety performance indicator. 

q  When virus outbreak was under control and work was about the resume from office the MD requested for the RA and research to control the virus spread and to identify the effective control measures. Significant findings of RA were also shared with team before starting the office. 

q  The crucial step taken by the Management for the updating of Health and Safety management system and to implement and volunteer its compliance by all the office staff.

q  An email will sent to all employees in washing hands and other hygiene procedures and same will be uploaded on company’s intranet. Posters shall also be displayed on step by step procedures of hand washing in restrooms. Work instruction on social distancing measures and procedures on wearing PPE shall also be developed and shared with workers.

q  Human Resource department also take the ownership in updating the first-aid policy, fire evacuation arrangements and other essential emergency procedures.

q  Trainings shall be provided to all workers in order to implement modified procedures so that it is understood thoroughly for the workers ease to follow them.

q  Actively monitoring process shall be taking place in order to check on the new arrangement compliance and behavioural safety observations will be made to avoid non-conformance of the procedures by the workers. Safety tours will also be conducted on timely basis regularly as a precautionary measure.

q  The contract with the cleaning company will be extended to ensure the cleanliness and disinfection of the premises. Hygienic process will also be monitored.
