Task 3: Benefits of certification to an ISO occupational health and safety management system standard to the organisation

Introduction:

Question3: What arguments could you use to help the Managing Director understand the benefits to the organisation of maintaining occupational health and safety management system certification?                                                                            (Marks 20)

 

 ANSWER:

The ISO-45001 it is new international Standard for OH&S and can be applied to all types of industries. The implementation of an OH&S system have various benefits and it also enables an organisation to provide safe and healthy workplaces, prevent work related injury and ill health, and continually improve its OH&S performance. Some of the other benefits are also enlisted below:

·    Adoption of ISO-45001 OH&S system will encourage to create, maintain and circulate Formal Health and Safety policy and to set and attain OH&S objectives this is one of the basic must and legal requirement in any organization.

·    The organization will be legally complied by following the rules of the provincial, local and National legislation bodies in the business activities to avoid any legal enforcement actions and notices, which will not have any impact and develop companies’ reputation.

·         Work related injuries, ill-health, Incidents and accidents will be drastically reduced and will improve the productivity of the organization. The absence and sickness rate will be low and result in less staff turnover. ISO 45001 offers a framework for organizations to identify potential safety hazards before they contribute to an accident. By addressing risks within your operations, your organization will enjoy fewer unwelcome surprises.

·         It improves the safety of employees and workplace this boost the worker morale and awareness on HSE matters this encourage their involvement in health and safety. 

·         The ISO OH&S system allows organization to get recognized for having an international bench mark which in return influence customer and stack holders confident on your practice of safe work and environment they are more likely to do business with your company

·         The new IS0 45001 standard calls for a top-down commitment to safety. By making safety and health part of an organization’s management system, ISO 45001 holds C-suite executives accountable for worker wellness and foster management involvement and commitment.

·         Employee involvement is a key ingredient in any successful safety program. The ISO 45001 standard offers a structured way to promote worker consultation and participation.

As a result, employers who implement a successful ISO 45001 management system may enjoy lower out-of-pocket expenses and premiums, including worker’s compensation.

·         This encourages the workers to report any unsafe activity or behaviour and improvise incident reporting and investigation process in order to ensure the activities are carried out as per set as per SSOW.

 

·         ISO 45001 management system also encourages you to develop improved communication process, training and consultation arrangements and also motivate organization in setting and achieving SMART objectives.

·         Performance review check is don annually which helps the OH&S continuously improve consistently in the organization.

Therefore looking at the scenario the organization is ISO 45001 certified and availing all the listed benefits because of their international standard recognition, which will help me to convince the MD to not discontinue this certification.
